Here at MaxxEV we are delighted to be able to offer our customers the convenince provided by giving their EV drivers a Shell EV Charge Card.

Please find below answers to some of the most frequeslty askled questions that our EV specialists get asked.

What is Shell Recharge?

Shell Recharge is Shell’s on-forecourt Electric Vehicle (EV) charging service, powered by the Shell Recharge card from Maxxev.

How many Shell Recharge CHARGE POINTS locations are open?

Shell Recharge Solutions offers access to over 10,000 public EV charging points across the UK, including over 500 Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging points on our UK forecourts, at hubs and destinations. Shell plans to grow their own public EV charging network to 100,000 by 2030. This means that 90% of all UK drivers will be within a 10-minute drive of a Shell rapid charger.

What speed are Shell Recharge chargers?

Shell offers rapid and high-power charging, with speeds ranging from 50kW to 175kW. Shell’s plan is to install hundreds more charge posts on retail sites across the UK over the coming years, aligning with customer demands.

Where can I find my nearest Shell Recharge location?

A full list of sites offering Shell Recharge posts are available on the Shell Recharge app. This is updated as new locations open.

How many charge posts are provided at each site? Can I check the charge post is available / book one before I arrive?

Most of our sites have one post available. We are working on providing multiple posts on as many sites as possible. Although customers cannot reserve a charging post in advance, you can check if the charge post is available using the Smoov or Shell Recharge apps. Within the apps, Shell Recharge locations are marked with the Shell logo above a circle. This circle appears green when the charge post is available and red when in use.

Is my electric vehicle compatible with Shell Recharge?

Shell Recharge is compatible with most EVs as our rapid 50kW and high-powered 150kW direct current (DC) chargers are designed to work with most vehicle types that are currently on the road. We provide connections for combined charging systems and CHAdeMO on both 50kW and 150kW chargers, as well as AC Type 2 (43kW) on the 50kW charge posts. Tesla adaptors are not supplied but drivers can use their own adaptors on the CHAdeMO connector.

How long will it take to charge my electric vehicle with Shell Recharge Chareg Card?

Vehicles starting at 20% can get to 80% charge in 30 minutes or less on our >150kW chargers².

How can you say it will take 30 minutes? Aren’t all cars different?

Yes, we understand that all cars are different, and it is the car which manages the speed of the charge. However, we quote 30 minutes as a guide for our customers, as our 150kW charge posts typically enable most cars to charge 20-80% in approximately 30 mins.

Do I have to charge for the full time, can I just top up for five minutes?

Shell Recharge is completely flexible, so customers can charge for the amount of time they require – there is no minimum charge time.

Do I have to stay with my car/on the forecourt whilst it’s charging? Can I pop off to a meeting?

You can leave your car charging at the Shell Recharge post and monitor progress through the Shell Recharge app. However, you should only leave your car in the Shell Recharge space for the time needed to charge your car. We ask our customers to be considerate of others and to not exceed 60 minutes charging time.

Will there be a penalty for drivers who leave their cars to charge for longer than 60 minutes?

Shell have a parking ticket system to discourage cars from overstaying. Shell do request that customers only leave their car in the Shell Recharge space for the time needed to charge their car and continually review their enforcement policies.

What is the difference between a ‘rapid’, a ‘fast’ and a ‘high-powered’ charger?

With Shell Recharge’s rapid 50kW chargers, you can typically charge an EV from 20-80% in up to 60 minutes. High-powered 150kW chargers can deliver power in approximately 30 minutes

Where does the electricity for the Shell Recharge Card come from?

Shell Recharge locations are supplied with electricity from 100% certified renewable sources.

What’s a REGO certificate?

The Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin scheme is there to provide complete transparency to customers about the proportion of electricity in the National Grid that is supplied by renewable sources. Every time one megawatt hour (MWh) of renewable electricity is produced, a REGO certificate is issued by Ofgem to the generator of that electricity. Suppliers use these REGO certificates to provide an audit trail that matches the units of energy we buy with those from a renewable generator. The number of REGO certificates that are available match the exact amount of renewable electricity that is produced and is put into the National Grid.

How do REGOs benefit Shell Recharge Card customers?

REGOs are the best way to ensure that the energy consumed whilst recharging your vehicle is matched to a renewable generator. This helps you track your carbon footprint and enable you to play a role in supporting the transition to a low carbon energy future.

Won’t electric vehicle charging put too much pressure on the grid?

The power demand of an electric car means it is not like plugging in an iron or putting on the kettle – it is more like plugging in an extra house. That is why Shell is also supporting the transition to electric vehicles by working on a system to help the grid handle the predicted increase in electric vehicles.

Isn’t having electricity on a petrol forecourt dangerous? If it’s raining, am I in danger of being electrocuted?

EV charging is completely safe, including in the rain. Electricity only flows between the charger and the car once the cables are locked in place.
