How EV tyres drive efficiency and savings

Unlocking your vehicle potential: EV tyres

In the rapidly evolving electric vehicles (EVs) market, every advancement counts toward maximising efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Recently, research has shed light on a surprising yet significant contributor to both: the humble tyre.

Studies reveal that, on average, EV tyres can extend a car’s range by seven per cent, equivalent to an additional 18 miles per charge for a vehicle with a 250-mile range (WLTP). For the average UK driver, this translates to an extra 700 miles per year—a journey akin to driving from London to John O’Groats.

The impact of EV-compatible tyres becomes even more pronounced when scaled up to the national level. Michelin’s analysis for the UK market found that EVs fitted with e-PRIMACY tyres could collectively gain an astounding 495 million miles in additional range annually, resulting in a staggering £84 million in savings.

John Howe, Managing Director for UK & Ireland at Michelin, highlights the tangible benefits:

“EV-suitable tyres not only enhance battery range, allowing drivers to travel further per charge, but these tyres last longer on an electric car than a standard tyre. Getting an additional 700 miles and making £120 in savings per year simply by having EV suitable tyres is an easy win for drivers.”

Furthermore, Michelin has identified the top 10 EV models poised to gain the most miles and savings per charge with e-PRIMACY tyres. For instance, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 could travel an extra 26 miles per charge, saving £4.55 each time. Similarly, the Tesla Model 3, Volkswagen ID.5, and Mercedes EQA stand out with substantial gains in range and savings.

To empower EV owners to assess the benefits firsthand, Michelin has introduced the e-PRIMACY Calculator. This tool enables drivers to calculate the additional mileage and financial savings per charge achievable by switching to Michelin’s EV-compatible tyre range compared to standard tyres.

The technology behind EV-compatible tyres involves innovations such as lower rolling resistance and optimised sidewall features, which reduce energy absorption and extend battery range.

“A great deal of innovation and research goes into producing a tyre that can increase the range of an electric car,” notes Howe. “Beyond the numbers, it reflects a step towards making electric mobility not only more environmentally attractive but also more economically appealing. This gives EV users more freedom and flexibility in their daily travels.”

In conclusion, as EV adoption continues to surge, maximising efficiency and cost-effectiveness becomes paramount. EV-compatible tyres offer a simple yet impactful solution, driving both environmental sustainability and economic viability in electric transportation.
